As the book draws to a close, it feels as though Alex Verus has at last discovered his sense of direction; in this book, his actual nature is exposed. And it is amazing. Alex has been wasting time for quite some time. It seems that either Benedict Jacka or Verus, or perhaps both, didn’t really know where they were headed before things started to come together in Book 10. Although there were some excellent moments, the stories overall seemed to be more filler than anything else. temporary solutions until a decision was made. And now I’ll tell you that it has.
This book went all in if Go Big or Go Home was a storytelling style. From the first to the last page, it is all about determination and bloody resolution. Shocking revelations concerning bloody events are included. There are thrilling almosts, high risk decisions, and take a chance choices. It is understanding that Drakh was right about Verus all along. But also so very wrong.
Under no circumstances begin reading any of these if you have never done so. This volume’s strength lies in the way it approaches the past. Missing it is missing the essence of what makes this so wonderful. Yes, there have been occasions when I questioned whether the series would actually conclude. But Forged brings back the faith. and still more.
You can tell a book is outstanding when you finish it and wonder how the next one will surpass it. The fact that what comes next is the conclusion to this 12-book series further raises the stakes. But after this, I’m confident that Benedict Jacka will deliver a conclusion that beyond my wildest expectations. I can’t wait, too.
The Review
Forged
Packed with tension and action, but short and cliffhangery. Jacka has announced that the next book is the last, making this one the penultimate showdown. I won't tell you who the final showdown is with, but I will say that in this book he has at least provisionally resolved his issues with two of the following three parties: the Council, Richard Drakh, and Anne. Bottom line: tough, gritty, dark, with some triumphs, but shorter than you'd like.
