My Life as Kelsey is definitely a novel for teenagers. Kelsey is attempting to live her life at the centre of everything. The only thing present is a girl trying her best; there are no mythical creatures or terrifying adventures. You could tell Kelsey was a good person from the beginning.
She had her issues, especially with her mother’s limitations on her life, but overall, she was a wonderful person to be around. She acted in such genuine ways throughout the novel that it was difficult for me to discover anything about her that actually offended me. I greatly valued the fact that she was a real person with real feelings.
The supporting characters are great too. Kelsey was quite fortunate to have Adam because he was such a caring and nice person. Stone was a very kind and caring person who was acutely aware of his shortcomings and financial ruin in a way that charmed me over. I really enjoyed it since the writing and characters made this book so simple to read and get into.
The horrific incident detailed in the synopsis was the only thing that caused me to deduct one star from my ranking. It was heartbreaking, but I didn’t feel like Kelsey’s reaction or the reactions of people around her were thoroughly addressed. If you’re looking for a book about “tragedy,” look elsewhere.
This was the one item, as great everything else was, that felt more like a plot device than a moment that would change your life. Do I suggest this book? Definitely. This is the book to read if you’re seeking for characters who are true to themselves, open to love while caring for others, and honest about their feelings.
About The Book
My mom’s plan is for me to be valedictorian, and the only way to get there is to avoid the opposite sex. “They’re demons,” she says. I stick to her rules and do everything she asks me to do. Then Stone Maverick Avery swoops in stealing my first kiss and causing me to doubt everything my mom has ever told me.
Are men really that bad? My lips don’t seem to think so. Right when I’m ready to abandon the rules, tragedy strikes and I’m left to unravel the secrets my mother kept. Who can I trust to help me when even my own mother deceived me? The kiss-stealing boy? He’d need to prove he’s more than his designer sunglasses and rockstar attitude.
My Life as Kelsey is a roller coaster ride of discovery about love: letting it in, handing it out, and releasing it to the wind.
The Review
My Life as Kelsey
My Life as Kelsey is a quick and easy read and Kelsey is a likable character. I suspect she has a bit of PTSD from what I consider abuse from her mother. Raised to think that men are evil she isn't allowed to date. She isn't allowed to have a life outside of schoolwork and her mother pushes her hard. Upon her mother's death, her grandmother tells her that her mother had no reason for hating men. When she learns of her father and goes to live with him, we find out that what her grandmother had said is true, Adam is a good man.
