Why does Ace waste his life away travelling Southeast Asia while excessively intoxicated while his friends open restaurants and start families? Why did he break up with his girlfriend in Paris? He has nothing in common with Charlie, so why does he develop a crush on him? Why is he playing with Mia, Maggie, and so many other unidentified women?
Although it was simple to figure out what had ultimately occurred, Eng answers all of these questions piecemeal. The conclusion is yet equally painful. Although he can enchant both men and women with his tales of backpacking, Ace isn’t a perfect person. The ups and downs of living together are beautifully, tenderly, and realistically depicted in his relationship with Caroline.
The central characters in the book “Never Go Full Pai” have a love of photography and camping. The story switches back and forth between Ace’s history and present, and I couldn’t wait to learn more about Ace’s enigmatic past. Ace’s disgust for Instagram and the hypocrisy surrounding it resonated with me as well.
You feel as though you are in the middle of the action because to the vivid descriptions of cities like Vietnam and Thailand, food booths and the people who work there, and the mayhem within people’s heads and lives.
You can smell the books at Mhi’s run-down bookstore, taste the steamy bowl of pho, feel the warmth of the Parisian sun, the bone-chilling cold of the rain in Chiang Mai, and taste the warmth of Paris. Ace frequently laments how his favourite locations are becoming “touristy” and losing their appeal, and for good cause.
You might wonder, “How does Pai fit into all of this?”. Ace and Charlie make crucial decisions in Pai. Ace cautions his friends to “never go full Pai,” but what actually transpires is just incredible.
This beautifully written book about travel, friendship, and love had me turning the pages at a breakneck pace. The characters in Eng’s debut book are fully developed, the plot moves along well, and the mystery is kept going until the very end.

The Review
Never Go Full Pai
Just finished this book. And like any great and memorable adventure vacation, I found myself not wanting this book to end. Not because I am a photographer and Jeffrey effortlessly describes the most difficult part of photography: how to make a viewer feel about what they are seeing. And not because last year I spent 7 months backpacking through SE Asia and visited all places Jeffrey described in this book. And not because I stayed in hostels for 7 months, living that hostel life. Yes to all of the above. But most important is that this book is great story. I was hooked after few pages and did not stop till I finished reading it. It takes you on a dream-like adventure of a lifetime. Highly recommend Never go Full Pai!
