Lonnie Clifford, a super-genius with a photographic memory, is depicted in the story’s opening scene leading a happy life as a waitress. Then one day, a strange figure reveals to him that he is one of the two “SUPER BABIES” that the dark government organisation “DARPA” created as part of “OPERATION MIDNIGHT” and that his parents aren’t actually his original parents.

They carry out operations like brainwashing and gene editing to make warriors resistant to fear, pain, and the ability to restore limbs lost in battle. Derek Spillbane, the guy in charge, is unknown to anyone and has no known physical characteristics. Now Loonie must decipher the hints given by his birth parents while also outsmarting this wicked organisation.

He is joined in this fight by his best buddy Dalton and his coworker Fey, so he is not fighting alone. The events develop gradually, and nobody Loonie knows is secure. Rick Simonds consistently produces tense conspiracy thrillers. This book was dark, exciting, bizarre, and fun.

Undoubtedly, this is among the most captivating books I’ve read this year. I enjoy reading a good conspiracy thriller with a mysterious government agency and a villain who believes his nasty and crazy schemes are for the sake of humanity. The writing is engaging and new, and the research was done properly. I really enjoyed the action-packed storyline that kept me on the edge of my seat.

I had a lot riding on what would transpire with Loonie. I adored the character of Loonie. He has a photographic memory, but he is clueless on what to do with his life. It’s fascinating to observe Loonie’s character growth as he goes from being quiet and unsure of what to do with his life to being a man who is clear about the kind of life he wants. The true winner for me was the plot and Loonie’s characters.

However, I did not enjoy the supporting cast, notably Fey, who did not contribute anything beyond serving as the story’s stereotypical love interest. I think there was a lot more that could have been done with her character than just having her be our protagonist’s love interest.

Dalton is supposed to be Loonie’s best buddy, but we seldom ever see the two of them together, and I would have loved to spend more time with him. “Operation Midnight” is still a fantastic read overall. You should read this if you enjoy conspiracy theories and police procedurals.
