Hope Hanna Murphy by E.D. Hackett
It was one of those instances when I was very moved by the Hope Hanna Murphy‘s cover. The title is intriguing and seductive. One might infer from the title that the book is about optimism and aspirations for the future. However, the book holds the reader’s attention and has much more in its pages.
In a very understated yet meaningful way, author E.D. Hackett imparts several crucial life lessons that we frequently overlook in our haste through life. Although they are straightforward and well-known to us, these teachings get lost in the race to succeed. Sometimes the solution to your issue is just a step away.
In the book, Carly thinks that moving in with her lover, who lives miles away, is the best way to get away from the life her parents made her live. When things do not turn out the way she had hoped, her hopes are dashed. She eventually embarks on a quest for fulfilment after having a careless boyfriend and working in a dead end job.
In a twist of fate, Carly is sent back to her childhood home on Block Island to learn the truth about her past after receiving shocking DNA test results. Her childhood neighbour Chris is her first cousin, according to the DNA test, but neither of them is aware of their family history. The mystery deepens when she comes to know that Chris is marrying her best friend’s sister and his family will be at the wedding.
Carly starts to doubt and distrust everyone and everything in her immediate environment. Everyone seems to be keeping something to themselves. At this point, the question that arises is: Will Carly unravel the mystery of her past before the wedding or will she never learn the real story behind her family and her life?
I won’t give away any more information and ruin the surprise. It’s a pleasant book to curl up with while drinking coffee. Family, love, hope over uncertainty, friendship, community, and most importantly self-discovery are among the book’s themes. The writing is easy and straightforward. The reader can feel like they are a part of each character’s life because everything happens in perfect harmony. Tell everyone to try it.

A lovely and enjoyable read. I quickly found myself enveloped in the story and breezed through this book very quickly. The characters were highly relatable and well-rounded. I particularly loved Carly’s storyline and felt my heart break along with hers. The writing is clean and engaging, and the ending is highly satisfying and inspiring. Even if you have not read the first book, it is still easy to read and stands well on its own. I connected with many aspects of the story and very much enjoyed reading it.
