The synopsis for The Poser was intriguing enough to read. The conflicting points of view between the aggressive cop and the enigmatic killer were fantastic. Writing by David Temple from the perspective of the killer genuinely gave me the chills because it was so well-planned and precise in the correct ways that it gave you everything you would anticipate from a killer. The in-depth look Temple creates into Hollywood’s behind-the-scenes world definitely caught me off guard. Although it added an unanticipated twist to the plot, I wasn’t anticipating Norelli’s inquiry to focus on a sex ring that operates behind closed doors.
Norelli’s persona did cause me some problems. I almost detested how cliché her persona was. She almost became too much because she pushed too hard, constantly played the strong man, and was obsessed with 80s rock and muscle cars. You begin to realise that her character is more complex than first appears, but you never fully learn the whole tale until later in the book.
Additionally, I believed that too many different story lines were going on at once. Some of them nearly overshadowed other storylines, while others had the potential to be more but were abandoned or cut short. There were sporadic chapters devoted to characters’ points of view that really didn’t make sense or fit in with the major plot arc, and some of the minor, off-shoot story arcs seemed to come out of left field. Sometimes the outcome was a hint into the main plot, while other times it seemed to serve solely to add complexity in an odd, and frequently needless, manner. Parts of the novel were choppy and unclear because of the conflicting storylines.
Overall, I found this story to be impressive. The relationship between Norelli and her boyfriend was wonderful, and the plot itself had me on my toes. Several times, just as I thought I understood the case, a new plot twist would catch me off guard. And as for the conclusion, I can only say that I was utterly stunned and surprised. I gave it four stars because it was an easy read and a page turner. I’m eager to see out what Temple will come up with next.
About The Book
Across town, rookie Detective Patricia Norelli is working late with hopes of breaking through her own glass ceiling with a promotion in the LAPD. Their paths unexpectedly collide when Johansen is discovered dead in her Bel Air home, only hours after Oscar night festivities ended.
With one note but even fewer clues, authorities rule it a suicide. Norelli’s instinct says murder; a hunch worth risking a pending promotion to prove otherwise. When a long list of suspects emerges, she and partner Detective Stuart Brown find themselves entangled in a chaotic series of lies.
Trying to find the real killer amidst a web of deception, Norelli & Brown lose ground when a key suspect turns up dead. Then in the middle of reworking hunches, Brown has to take paternity leave. Before he can return, Norelli gets too close to the truth and lands in the trap of a pathological serial killer.
The Review
The Poser
Thrillers are not typically my style but I couldn't put this down. It had me chomping at the bit from the very beginning! I really liked the short chapters which make it easy to justify reading "just a few more pages" 🙂 and who doesn't love a strong kickass female lead?? There were many twists and turns along the way which made it a really fun read.
PROS
- There were many twists and turns along the way which made it a really fun read.
- Easy to read, never boring, loved the ending!
CONS
- Juvenile, poorly edited with too many grammar errors to count.
- The sex scenes are ridiculous. The characters are cartoonish.
