Do you read mythical folklore or fables? In that case, you discover that nothing is ever what it seems. For instance, appearances might be deceitful, as when Zeus impregnated Danae by sending down golden rain. Or, like in the legend of the sirens, attractive ladies would hypnotise men into dying by luring them to their deaths with their seductive singing. These are the ancient as time itself gods and goddesses’ antics. Bhattacharya enthrals readers with a straightforward story about a deity and a snake. If you’ve come this far, you’re done for.
No matter where she goes, secrets seem to follow Darya, and she’s absolutely right. She and her longtime friend Veda arrive in Mumbai for a two-month visit and check into a mansion off Chapel Road in Bandra. As soon as they meet the home’s owners, Viktor and Debbie, the strange vibes are out of this world. Darya is enrolling in barista training in order to prepare for the coffee business she and her boyfriend Aaron plan to start, while Veda… is still looking for the best alternative.
Darya learns that she is once again caught in a risky scenario as a result of hearing the tales about Chapel Road. In addition to Viktor and Debbie being quite peculiar, the entire alley is littered with reports of missing girls, and one of them has a sister who lives next door. In the brief time they spend with her, Veda and Darya get to know Jasmine via their inquiries about her missing sister, and Darya learns about an intriguing tale that appears to have a lot to do with the disappearances.
Darya begins to wonder if staying, despite hearing the rumours, was the wisest course of action as the other female tenants begin going missing. Snooping appears to have been the worst choice of all, particularly once Veda goes missing and she begins to feel as though someone is watching her. When Darya learns that the scope of the missing girls case is much greater than she could have ever anticipated, she is left with only one lead to pursue—and it comes from an unlikely source.
The Secret Angels by Smita Bhattacharya is an interesting mystery with several levels of complexity that will keep readers wondering right up to the very end. Darya and Veda are the ideal targets because everyone has something to hide, but they are also strong. As additional parts of the puzzle are revealed, the reader may stay interested because the author has developed them quite nicely. Although the characters of Viktor, Darya, and Veda are pretty well known, Debbie adds a new wrinkle.
The story’s pace is consistent throughout, the writing is excellent, and there aren’t many grammatical or spelling mistakes. The story is worth reading in its entirety, and those who like occult fiction and mysterious mysteries should give it a try. Although this is the second book of Darya Nandkarni’s Misadventures, it can be read independently because the puzzles don’t seem to be connected.
About The Book
The year before, Darya accidentally solved the mystery of her uncle’s untimely death in Goa. A year later, she finds herself embroiled in another bizarre mystery: this time at Mumbai’s quirky Chapel Road.
Darya had imagined Bandra’s Chapel Road to be a quaint little lane when she’d decided to rent there. Not long after though she realized that a tragic mystery lurked behind its peculiar charm. Three women had disappeared from there in the past three years, purportedly murdered by a serial killer. No dead bodies were found and no one was ever caught.
And now it was that time of year again. Who would it be next? At first, Darya is only concerned about her creepy landlords, her reticent neighbors, and her temperamental roommate and best friend, Veda. But when one of the missing girls winds up dead in a hotel room, and Veda disappears, Darya is spurred to find out what’s really going on.
But what if it was her own life, actually, that was most in danger?
